SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BASED
TRIO |
| MAXEEN - Tom Bailey (vocals, bass),
Shannon McMurray (guitar) and Jay Skowronek (drums) - are gearing up to release their self
titled debut, and first full length album on November 18 on Los Angeles independent
SideOneDummy Records. Produced by veteran Ed Stasium
(Ramones, Soul Asylum, Smithereens, Living Colour) at tiny Eagle Sounds Studios in
Durango, CO, Maxeen is a distillation of the '80s music the band grew up listening to and
loving. The songs range from the spacious melodic world beat of the Police and the
anthem-like drive of U2 ("Delete Lola," "Love Goes a Long Way,"
"Lead Not Follow") to the aggro-punk angularity of the Pixies and the
Replacements ("Please," "White Flag," "Shuffle My Feet"). The band, who first met in the early summer of 2002, say they felt
an immediate connection the first time they got together. "It's like when you meet
that girl and feel an instant chemical attraction," says McMurray about the trio's
instant rapport. "It evokes that passion, that fire, that creativity, a kind of
craziness. When we first got together in that room, something happened." "We incorporate all kinds of influences," says drummer
Skowronek. "It just so happened the bands I loved turned out to be the same ones
Shannon and Tom did. We're all open to listening to new things, which is key to any band
if you want to grow, adapt, and change." For a band that has been together a little more than a year, this
album is a remarkable achievement; one not lost on its members. "We try to turn the limitations of being a trio into
strengths," says McMurray. "We play to the song. We all have a role, and we fill
that role. We don't try to step on each other." The result is a spacious, tuneful sound that combines hook-filled,
multi-layered choruses with straight-ahead raucous punk-rock, sometimes in a single song. "We're doing this the way we want to do it," concludes
Bailey about the band's grass-roots approach. On their self-titled debut, Maxeen does just that. You can catch Maxeen on tour in the following cities: 11.14 - PHOENIX THEATER Petaluma, CA w/Yellowcard and Matchbook
