"I
had this fear of doing a second record." -Emerson Hart |
For a while, it seemed like Tonic had basically fallen off the face of the earth. After the massive success of their first album, Lemon Parade, which was a critical part of what was dubbed the 'alternative' movement, nothing. While those other bands that were also in the alternative genre quickly put out lackluster sophomore efforts, Tonic still did nothing. Many of the other bands faded rather quickly. Who remembers Longpigs? No one. The same could be said for ten or twenty other bands from the same time period. Finally, Tonic has returned. After fighting with writer's block, personnel changes and record label mergers, Sugar has been released, and it was worth the wait. The first single, "You Wanted More," was an immediate hit and the rest of the album is just as good. It would appear that the time off did them some good and fans are being rewarded for their patience. VOX had the chance to chat with Tonic frontman Emerson Hart not too long ago. Nothing was off-limits and Emerson spoke about the time between albums, changes within the band and fear of the dreaded "sophomore slump." |
