Interviews
SUM 41
Deryck: We all met in high school, and uh, we went through high school together as friends and at the end of it we formed a band. VOX: So it was sort of the classic guys who wanted to live the dream and be rock stars. Cone: Yeah, we were all in different bands, rival bands, and then we formed one. VOX: Just to get all the chicks, right? Deryck: Yeah, well thats the idea. [Laughing] VOX: How about the name, Sum 41. Sounds like the answer to a math problem. Deryck: No, we started the band 41 days into summer. VOX: Pretty straight forward. No mystery Deryck: Yeah. Nothing too exciting. Cone: Thats our interview answer. We have other answers we can use, too. VOX: Stuff you save for the Internet chat rooms? Like that its something satanic or drug-related? Cone: Yeah, thats it. Deryck: Yeah, four lines and one ounce or something. VOX: How is touring going? Deryck: Its awesome. Its really fun. VOX: Everything you thought it would be?
Cone: Yeah, its great. Its not cushin but we get a hotel every night. Its like, its not as nice as being in a bus, but its pretty fun. VOX: Whats your favorite city to play in? Cone: San Francisco. Deryck: To play in? This place. [The Glass House in Pomona] Cone: Yeah, Pomona, but the nicest city Deryck: Oh, yeah, to live in, would be San Francisco, but playing wise is this place, this is the best club weve ever played at. VOX: How many times have you played here? Deryck: This is our third time. VOX: Where do you see rock music heading? You obviously dont fit into the whole rap-metal scene Deryck: I dont know. I have no idea where its heading. It keeps going in circles - guitar rock, to electronic and back to guitar rock again. I think were in a guitar rock phase right now. There are lots of heavy bands right now. VOX: What do you guys listen to in the van? Deryck: We listen to lots of stuff mostly rock bands, I guess. Weve been big fans of face to face for a long time all the SoCal punk bands rock bands. Cone: A lotta funny stuff, too. We listen to Tenacious D, and, umm, like today we were listening to Neil Hamburger. Do you know he is? He a comic guy. We also listen to funny stuff like that but a lot of punk and rock VOX: What inspired you guys? What made you pick up the guitar? Deryck: Ummm just music in general. We wanted to be a part of that whole scene. We all listen to tons of different bands and we wanted to do the same type thing. Wasnt like a specific band or person or style of music Cone: And were from a city where theres nothing to do either. We're from like this small city outside Toronto where theres really nothing much to do there.
Deryck: I dunno. I think its got its its good and bad. Its great for bands like to get known, and its bad for bands that spend a lot of money and lose a lot of money. Not so much not making money, but losing the money, then its bad. VOX: Losing money can be bad. Deryck: Its not normally a good thing. Cone: I think a lot of bands like Napster, but a lot of record companies dont. Like face to face is promoting Napster on this tour VOX: Record sales are up Deryck: I dont really know enough about Napster to have a firm belief in it, but it seems like a good thing. VOX: How about the album title - how did you arrive at that? Sounds like a religious thing Deryck: No, its just a non-stop half-hour of power. Cone: For a long time we couldnt play longer than half an hour. Deryck: Yeah, really, the whole this is our set, from beginning to end. We just went in and recorded our set. VOX: How do you guys get along? Deryck: Great. Like best friends. Cone: Its easy, were just hanging out with friends. VOX: Whats the next step for you guys? Deryck: Tour. And finish the record. VOX: Whats the Sum 41 live show like? Deryck: Non-stop, ass-whupin rock. For half an hour. [Much Laughter] |
