Mouth-Watering Rock
Saliva Are Ready to be Superstars.
"Make me your superstar!" growls Saliva front man Josey Scott
on the opening track ("Superstar") of the band's Island Records debut, Every
Six Seconds. The unbridled energy, intensity and conviction with which Scott delivers
the line is enough to get the adrenaline pumping and put you in the mood for the powerful
rock that Saliva creates. The lyric doesn't sound like it's a request, but a demand that
fans and radio alike will be hard pressed to deny.
Along with guitarists Chris Dabaldo and Wayne Swinney and a rhythm section of Dave Novotny
(bass) and Paul Crosby (drums), Scott seems to have come to the understanding that to
achieve stardom, Saliva needed to mold that energy into well-made and well-written songs.
Simple noise pumped through some speakers wasn't going to work, so these Memphis-based
boys have crafted tunes that, while raw and aggressive, can be played on the radio. Every
Six Seconds is an album that can be cranked up and listened to straight through,
beginning to end. It'll have you breaking out your air guitar or drums and playing along.
Scott can flat-out sing,
and when he takes brief forays into rapping, it's well-done and uncontrived. There isn't
any attempt at gangster-style rap or songs about how bad life is on the street, either.
But it's when he sings that Saliva is at its best, just pushing the tempo and grinding
along in highlights "Your Disease," "Hollywood" and "Beg."
