GRAND THEFT AUDIO
Chris McCormack: Making a porno, a flash porno! VOX: So whats this all about? CM: Our first single called "Stoopid Ass". VOX: "Stoopid Ass"? CM: "Stoopid Ass". VOX: Well, whats the song about? Jay Butler: What do you think? Its about us really, I suppose CM: I dunno hmm, stupid asses
CM: I dunno. I guess they shopped our song around to see what came back. We were lucky really - we had done video games. There was a couple things but I cant remember at the moment. JB: Were work whores. Well do anything for money, just anything. CM: If theres money we say yes. If theres no money - youre very lucky you got an interview. You havent given us any money. JB: Dont we get paid for this? Are we getting anything for this? VOX: 20 quid. CM: We were told we werent getting anything. Lots of money, 20 quid. JB: 20 quid! VOX: How did you all come together? CM: Well, you interviewed me before for the band Three Colours Red, and the drummer was in a band called The Wildhearts, Rich was in The Wildhearts , Jay was in a band called Real TV. And we all toured together three years ago. Jay was me mate for years. So was Rich JB: It was like lost people in a bar every night, you know what I mean CM: We always got drunk and said one day, "Ill be in a band with you." And then we got drunk again and we decided to do it. JB: We stopped drinking however CM: We all came together with aid of alcohol I suppose. And when we realized what a bad idea that was. VOX: Where did you all grow up? JB: I grew up in London, south England, so did Ralph, Rich grew up in Birmingham and he [Chris] hasnt grown up yet. CM: I was brought up in New Castle, in the north of England, beside Scotland, but we all lived in London...Ive lived there for the past six years. JB: It is the battle of the accents in this band! CM: Yea, yea. JB: You cant understand a word of what anyone is saying, "bluerreere!" CM: But yea, we have all lived together, I used to live with Rich. He [Jay] would come and drink all of our drinks cause he had no money and just scrounge. JB: Nothing has changed. CM: Yea, nothing has changed.
VOX: Which way is rock music heading? JB: East. CM: We dont really give a shit what anyone else is doing. JB: Its stopped being about set styles. All the bands we like, we have all this metal stuff, punk stuff, then we have, Im a massive sort of rap fan - the two get melded together. CM: We are going for this really modern thing, trying to bring it
forward a little bit what were doing. We have a wide variety. I bring in the guitar
cause thats VOX: What's your creative process like? CM: It works every way. Everyone is a songwriter in this band. I came in the band quite late cause of the 3 Colours Red thing. So a lot of the songs were done before I came into it...It could be a riff. Or it could be "Hey, he has something that we can rip off!" Thats where the name comes in: Grand Theft Audio, its quite fitting. VOX: What's the concept for the video that you're shooting today? JB: We get to look at loads of great looking women all day, and in between that weve got to move around a bit. CM: The idea for the video is completely changed. JB: How in the fuck do you know what the idea is? CM: I do know. The 2 actors that were in the film ["Dude, Where's My Car"] were going to be here waking up the morning after, which is part of the film. But at the last minute, we got a phone call that they werent going to be in it. So JB: Pretty much a performance CM: A live gig. Its was supposed to be a real story-line, but
weve had to VOX: Will this song be released as a single? CM: Yea, it was the third most added song in the alternative lists. Its really good. I dont really understand America, but they say its good so I believe them. VOX: What are your tour plans? JB: Were off to Germany next. CM: Were coming back to do the [movie] premier in early December and I think a gig in LA. JB: Well be back for a proper American tour in the New Year. |
