Santa Barbara may not be thought of as a hot bed for alternative music. Actually, there is an active and thriving music scene in the Santa Barbara area that has given birth to Toad The Wet Sprocket, Ugly Kid Joe, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and our guests for this exclusive, Dishwalla. When we caught up with J.R. and Rodney prior to their March 10, 1999 performance at the Troubadour in Hollywood, they had just finished being interviewed by someone who apparently had never heard more than "Counting Blue Cars" on the radio. The guys seemed to have fun answering the questions lobbed at them with tongue-in-cheek responses. J.R. and Rodney appeared to take great joy in giving smart-ass answers, with their interviewer having no clue that he was being mocked. It’s no wonder the press gets such a bad rap…

But don’t get us wrong – we enjoyed our time with J.R. and Rodney, and they seemed to like it that we had actually listened to their latest record, And You Think You Know What Life’s About. These surfer boys were fun, easygoing and definitely relaxed.
