Interviews
Buckcherry

VOX: What up with alternative music?
Keith: What’s alternative, Josh?
Josh: I have no idea what alternative is.

VOX: We always ask that, 'What is alternative nowadays?'
K: I think rock n’ roll is the new alternative. So, straight up rock that is about having a good time and that’s what we’re after.

VOX: So, introduce yourselves to your fans...
J: Hey, I’m Josh.
K: I’m Keith Nelson from Buckcherry.

VOX: How did Buckcherry come together?
J: Keith and I started this male prostitution ring and it just got old. We were sick of all of the…
K: It’s hard work.
J: It is, you know.

VOX: Did you guys lose the K-YŽ sponsorship, was that it?
K: We went from Astro-GlideŽ to K-YŽ...
J: To dry!
K: To dry, yeah!
J: We started liking it dry!
K: Actually, we met through mutual friends, and we were in between bands and started writing together in Josh’s bedroom.
J: We didn’t like each other very much, not at first...
K: We still don’t!
J: Yeah, we started writing to a four track in my bedroom and the songs started coming together more and more. And we started getting excited so we put a band together.

"It’s really cool to meet new people and be in different places and be in a town you’ve never been before and the kids are singing the lyrics to the songs that aren’t on the radio, and that’s really cool."

VOX: How about the name?
J: Well, one of the guys that we were hoaring out was named "Buckcherry." And he had the biggest penis in our whole ring…you know, we had a different name when we started, but had to change it because of legal reasons. We just wanted a name that was easy to remember and we liked the story behind it, and that’s it.

VOX: What do you guys listen to?
J: We all listen to different stuff.
K: That’s a cool thing, if you ask all five of us you get five different answers.
J: Yeah…
K: The things that make Josh, inspire Josh, I mean we overlap on a couple bands…I’m inspired like by guys like Ron Jeremy...
J: [laughing] Seriously, he’s amazing.
K: Just amazing.

VOX: I look like him naked!
K: Yeah?
J: That’s great.
K: That’s the first thing I though when I saw you...
J: You have a lot of warts then!
K: ...that could be Ron Jeremy right there!
J: [laughing]

VOX: Is LA still home?  What's it like coming back?
J: Of course it’s home.
K: It takes a couple of days. I mean I’m not used to driving a car.
J: He doesn’t even have a fuckin’ car.
K: I got rid of it thinking I didn’t need it for the next couple of years.

VOX: What do you think of the LA scene?
J: You know, it really used to bother us but now we don’t really care.
K: We’re never here so…
J: The LA scene is what you make of it, there is no "scene."  I mean it’s what you make of it. If you work hard you’ll get people out to your shows and that’s what we did. There wasn’t any kind of rock scene, and I don’t think there is one now. But we haven’t been around town much - we’ve been on the road for seven months now.

VOX: What’s touring like?
J: It’s what it is - you just got to get used to it. We’ve been out for seven but only in a bus for a month.
K: Yeah, the first six were hard.
J: Yeah, we were in a van…

VOX: Just chicks night and day?
K: You know what’s really rewarding…
J: People think that…
K: Yeah, people think it’s [touring] a Motley Crue video, before you actually do it, and it’s so not like that…
J: Not at all…
K: It’s really cool to meet new people and be in different places and be in a town you’ve never been before and the kids are singing the lyrics to the songs that aren’t on the radio, and that’s really cool. It makes the other 23 hours in the day a little bit easier to get through…
J: Those are the exciting things…

VOX: It must be nice to get to the hotel and take showers.
J: Yeah, showers, sink showers are very popular.  But the first thing I think about when I get out to the new location, you know, is you have to find a good place to take a shit!
K: Absolutely
J: Oh, to take a crap, sorry…

VOX: Now Lit Up is getting all the radio play right now - what is it about?
J: It’s about my first cocaine experience when I was sixteen. I had found God at that moment…cause I like to drink, and I am so skinny, I was always the first guy to pass out when I went out with my friends. So, I got sick of that and I did a line at this party. There was a bunch of people around this giant mirror. At that point I went from like 8 beers drunk to pretty much even keel and that to me was magic. So that was my combination for a long time.

VOX: The whole cocaine thing must be pissing a lot of people off.
J: Ahhhh, not as much as you think.
J: Cocaine hasn’t been that popular in a long time. I mean crystal meth kinda screwed up the whole coke market cause it’s cheaper and you stay up longer.
K: If I were a coke dealer I’d be pissed!
J: Yea, I’d very upset…

VOX: Yeah, I’m a coke dealer and I’m pissed about it.
K: Did you file for unemployment when the whole meth thing took off?

VOX: Of course, on the dole, you know.  So what’s next, another record, have you started writing?
J: We got another record right now if you wanna record it…
K: We had like thirty songs for this record and just weeded it down to the 12 that are on it. There is another record coming, but it won’t be out for awhile. We have a lot of work ahead of us.
J: We always wanted to make a record that you could listen to from beginning to end and not touch the CD player. We hope that’s what we accomplished and what we want to continue to do. If that means only putting nine songs on the record cause the other ones don’t pass, then we’ll do that.
K: I get really bored after about 45 minutes and I’m ready for something else.
J: Doesn’t even matter if it’s great, after 45 you’re like, all right, let’s figure out something new, hear something different.

VOX: What’s the writing process like?
K: Sometimes Josh has half the song, and we just have to arrange it and it’s rocking. Sometimes it’s the bass riff…
J: It’s definitely a group effort finishing the song. Someone will come in with a spark and we’ll always see it to the end we don’t get really attached to stuff. But we have our departments, Keith comes in with the music, and JB, comes in now and again with some music. I write all the lyrics and the melodies and we just hash it out in the studio together.
K: The good ones stick around, and the others that don’t fit, don’t fit and fall by the wayside.

VOX: Is there anything in the show that’s not on the album?
K: Oh yeah…
J: Always…
K: There’s about three or four songs that we’re playing that weren’t on the album or were written after the release.
J: Cause we get bored if we don’t play new material every night. It gives us something to look forward to as well.

VOX: So what do we expect for tonight?
K: Loud...
J:  Sweat!
K: Yeah, loud and sweat. A rock show!
J:  Lots of nonsense.  A lot of nonsense!
K: It doesn’t mean a goddamn thing
J:  Doesn’t mean nothing, just having a good time. We learned how to turn our neurosis into an attraction. It’s a circus!
