Hi-Fi Killers
American Hi-Fi Have "Hit" Written All Over Them

Picking the "next big thing", or trying to, is always a dangerous undertaking - there are so many factors that go into a band actually having a hit: will the powers that be at radio give it a chance? Does it fit with what's hot now? Does the band have a live show to back up the quality of the record? There are a number of other factors that come into play from the business side of things as well. It's never as easy as it seems.

If we were in a position to pick a band that will soon be on everyone's hot list, we would probably place our money on American Hi-Fi. You may wonder "Who?" But you won't be saying that for long. What helps is that the guys in AHF have all been around the music scene for some time, and they know what works. Stacy Jones, singer/guitarist for American Hi-Fi, is the former drummer for Veruca Salt and Letters to Cleo. Jones, along with guitarist Jamie Arentzen, bassist Drew Parsons and drummer Brian Nolan, make up American Hi-Fi. Together, AHF is set upon helping in the revival of guitar-based, melodic rock.

The first AHF single, "Flavor of the Weak", simply has to be a hit. It's just too good of a song to not skyrocket to the top of the charts. Jones describes the track as about being "In that situation where there is the boyfriend that gets high all the time and doesn't really respect his girlfriend and shit like that." It's a song that on one hand is humorous and lighthearted, but upon closer inspection, one sees the sad state of affairs in this all-to-common scenario. Many of tunes on the album are written in this manner: it's great radio-ready rock, and it's fun to listen to, but when you take a closer look and read the lyrics, you note the quality of the writing and the superiority of the song structure.

As AHF embark on what promises to be just the beginning of a long string of tour dates, we'll get to see whether they have the live show to back up the record. In the mean time, we'll just listen and enjoy.
